Why let your deer hide go to waste?
Normally, hunters and processors respectively toss the hide after a hunt. Why not consider having the hide tanned to remember your hunt? They are an alternative to a mount, and even if you have a trophy buck getting a shoulder mount, consider having the rest tanned! This is a responsible way to reduce hunt waste by essentially giving the hide a new life, as the hides make for great:
Everything in this process is done BY HAND, including the fleshing and stretching. It takes anywhere between 8 to 10 days to be completed- the sooner you get your hide in the tanning process, the better results. Please view our photos of past tanning below.
PLEASE NOTE: It is very important to get the hide into the cleaning and tanning process as soon as possible to avoid hair slippage. Please contact us ASAP after your deer is killed and skinned. Try to keep it from laying in blood if you can. We cannot guarantee hair slippage won't happen, but we will try to advise you on storage/transport methods to help reduce this.
JUST ADDED FOR 2019: Have a handmade bone needle made from your deer's leg! Add $25 and bring all four legs with hide (bringing all legs is to ensure success in case one bone splits). Turnaround is a bit longer for needles but they can be mailed to you (this fee covers postage too). They're 100% functional for crafting with, or just display. Shaped on natural sandstone over a 2+ hour period, we've written about these for Mother Earth News!
WE CANNOT AND WILL NOT TAN HIDES FROM OUT OF STATE DUE TO CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE (CWD) THREAT.
FOR THIS REASON, WE ALSO DO NOT BRAIN TAN.
Price: $100 per hide (+$25 if adding bone needle)
In order to ensure hides are going to be picked up, we ask for a $50 deposit (half) upon dropping the hide off.
Time: 8-10 days
Options: De-boned tail can be left on, or removed completely. Most people want the hide left as it is dropped off- rough edges included (also includes holes, if any, where hide was cut during skinning). If you do want it trimmed up, please let us know.
